Dear Friends,

Namaskar and welcome. Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) is a Hindu secondary school that was opened in 2002.  The Bhumi Puja (sod turning) for the construction of SVN was performed on the auspicious occasion of Lord Krishna’s Janamasthmi Day in 1998. Classes officially commenced on World Teacher's Day, 5th September 2002, with an enrolment of 35 students. Today, our student population is over 500 and SVN has made tremendous advances in the field of education and our students and staff has engaged in historic humanitarain activities such as our annual blood collection drives. SVN has embarked on a philosophy of education that is concerned with the overall development and transformation of the student. While academic brilliance is encouraged we also foster the eternal and universal human values of compassion, fearlessness, truth, forgiveness, and non-injury. The school's philosophy is encapsulated in its motto the ancient Vedic injunction – satyam vada dharmam cara svadhyaya pravacanabhyam na pramaditavyam: Speak the truth. Practice righteousness. Do not neglect studying and teaching. At SVN we are convinced that all education must eventually engender in the individual a profound awareness of one's social responsibility. This must lead to a commitment to dedicate oneself to the development of the larger community. When I envisioned this school during my studies in India and the United States, and from my expereinces as a teacher in Guyana, I realized that our country’s education system, a legacy of our colonial past, is severely limited in that while it emphasizes Western and Judeo-Christian values, it de-emphasizes the role of the traditional Indian culture inherited by the Indian child. We believe that because we live in a society characterized by cultural and religious diversity, the school education must reflect this diversity in its national curriculum. SVN seeks to remedy this imbalance with an appropriate cultural input in the school's standard Caribbean high school curriculum. SVN is a non-profit and non-govermental institution and  a moderate fee is charged to students to take care of our large administrative and maintenance expenses. To continue our efforts and to expand our work, we depend on public support. To all our supporters and friends, you all are an imporant part of the SVN family and I express my thanks once again. Sincerely, Swami Aksharananda, Founder and Principal
